Frequently Asked Questions...
Why do I need my chimney/flue sweeping?
Chimneys are there to allow the combustion gasses to escape freely. Sweeping regularly removes the soot and significantly reduces the chance of a chimney fire. Removing the soot from the chimney can also increase the efficiency of some appliances saving you money on fuel. Many insurance providers are now also insisting on an industry standard Certificate of Chimney Sweeping which we are able to provide.
How often should I get my chimney swept?
The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance. The frequency will depend on a number of factors including: Type of fuel, appliance used, frequency and duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, type of chimney. We will be able to advise on what’s best for you during our visit.
Smokeless fuel: At least once a year
Wood: Quarterly when in use
Bituminous coal: Quarterly when in use
Oil: Once a year
Gas: Once a year

Why should I use a Guild registered Chimney Sweep?
Guild sweeps undertake the most extensive training and assessment programme in the UK. The Guild requires member sweeps to be fully insured for Chimney sweeping and equipped to deal with all standard job situations. Members must undertake regular refresher training. Many members undertake additional professional training and are experts in their field. In the unlikely event your Guild sweep is unable to help, they should be able to recommend someone who can. - Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps

What do I need to do before my sweep visits?
We would ask for a clear passage from your door to the fire and adequate space to work in, usually 2m x 1.5m around the fire where possible. Please clear any ornaments from the hearth and perhaps from the mantelpiece. Please ensure your fire is unlit and cold as well as all spent fuel / ash and rubbish is removed. Whilst we are animal friendly we would recommend that all pets are put into another room whilst the work is been carried out.
What should I do to prepare for my Biomass Sweeping visit?
PLEASE ENSURE THE BIOMASS BOILER IS TURNED OFF THE NIGHT BEFORE OUR VISIT, during the downtime your thermal store should be able to cope with demand. In general we will also need a clear passage to the Biomass Boiler and adequate space to work in. Please clear items from around the Boiler and flue system.
